Concentrate on 6 fundamentals for improved hitting.

The ProCut Power Training Program for hitters was developed with an emphasis on the fundamentals of batting. Whether you play hardball or softball, fast pitch or slow, from the Little Leagues to the major leagues; understanding and using the fundamentals is essential to your success as a batter.

To create the perfect swing, remember these six fundamentals - Stance, Wind-Up, Rotate/Bat-Lag, Contact, Follow-Through, Freeze to Balance. Here are the details, step by step:

1) Hitters Stance

The Hitter's Stance is critical to setting up a powerful swing. This sets the fundamentals in motion and is required for balance and consistent contact.

  • Stand with feet slightly wider than shoulder width, toes pointing straight. Keep your feet inline with your body.

  • As you grip the bat, point the index fingers in the same direction to line up the middle knuckles. This grip will give you more leverage and power. Wrap your index fingers when lined up.
  • Bend your knees slightly and bend at the waist - this gives you a wider range of rotation.

  • Lift the hands to the top of the strike zone. (Top of the letters or armpits.) Elbows down and relaxed!

  • Your weight needs to be slightly on the back leg - about 60% back - 40% front.

  • Lastly, most all good hitters have a slow, relaxed movement in their stance. In other words, they don't stand rigid at the plate. This sway or movement relaxes the body's muscles while waiting for the pitch.

  • From this foundation, your goal is to make a slow, smooth transition to a quick, aggressive but controlled swing.
